| Balik. A highly nutritional grain cultivated in some of the HOLLOW EARTHS. FANNAUX are
much of it (TC, Z). Bande Dessinée. Litterally: "Drawn Strip". French term for Comic Strip, or CARTOONING. The exact meaning is however slightly different, as it does not necessarely imply humour and has long been considered a mature art form. See also ANGOULÊME, HERGÉ, NUIT BLANCHE and SPIROU. |

Battista, Giovanni. Looking very much like the famous Orson Welles of our world (ACO, CBD #87), he was a Third Class MAINTAINER in The TOWER. He went through it entirely with MILENA around 450 AT (GC), to finally come out in a different existential plane (LT). A quay bore his name on the North Shore of URBICANDE (GC). There also has been in our world an Italian architect named Giovanni Battista PIRANESI. See as well ORTÉLIUS, PALINGENIUS and VÉLASQUEZ.
Battista (The). A ship that foundered off Cape CORREARD eight days after leaving port, struck by the same tidal wave that sunk the main island of the CAYLUS archipelago. Michel ARDAN was one of the passengers, and some of the other survivors ended up in the mysterious giant LIBRARY (EC). See also MONT ANALOGUE.
Bauer, Franz. A young officer of XHYSTOS, born in 665 AT. He was sent to investigate SAMARIS in 696 AT and came back many years later, a victim of the SAMARIS EFFECT (GC).
| Bayreuth. [1] A small town between BRÜSEL and CALVANI. According to FRIEDRICH, it is the site of a colossal OPERA (RA). [2] A city in the West of Germany, on the Main river. There can be found a theater built in 1876 AD by king Ludwig II of Bavaria exclusively for showing the works of Richard WAGNER (PLI). |
|
| Beaujot (Mademoiselle). Assistant of Paul CICERI, at the CENTER FOR CARTOGRAPHY. Very sensitive about her marital status (FI). |
Bees. The bee is one of the few animal species to have been domesticated in the Obscure World, and even then apparently only on a small scale. Bee keepers, at any rate, do not seem to have a very high social status (GC). See FAUNA.
Belgica. "Belgium", in Latin. Name of an expedition to Antarctica in 1897-98 AD, that greatly contributed to increase our knowledge of this part of our world. See AMUNDSEN, STAMPS and STREETS OF BRUSSELS.
Bell Canada Head Office.
Dedicated in 1929 AD, this MONTREAL building seems to have fallen straight from the
Obscure Cities world, and is probably the site of a PASSAGE.
The most likely spot to try going through is probably the remarkable black Belgian marble
mural found at the end of a corridor (MHA).

Benayoun, Maurice (Pr). A scientist, he discovered the QUARX genus (CG).
Benarrouch, Karen. Assistant to Professeur BENAYOUN. We owe her, through the help of Olivier TISSOT, many precious informations on the QUARXS (LQ, OT).
Benett, L.. An engraver from our world who, in 1879 AD, illustrated Les cinq cents millions de la Begum [The Begum's Fortune], of Jules VERNE. His representation of Schultze's giant canon suggests that he has visited URBICANDE, unless he worked from a very precise description given by Verne himself (FU).

| Bio-light. The GAMMES of ZARA

after a long day of work (Z). See LIVA. Blampain, Philippe. Eminent obscurologist living in BRUSSELS. Adiantum pedatum (maiden-hair fern) |
Blossfeldtstad. Formerly BRENTANO. An Obscure City in the center of the CONTINENT, at the southern edge of the SEPTENTRIONAL JUNGLE (GC). Starting in 697 AT, it was entirely remodelled according to the photographs of Karl BLOSSFELDT, with the exception of the little forgotten house of the NIERENDORFs (EC). The suburb where Albert CHAMISSO moved after his downfall is probably outside of the city limits proper. Many buildings are equipped with an aircraft landing, and the city is known for its superb VEGETALISTIC STYLE (GC, ODH). Site of a famous scientific controversy (GC), possibly related to the disappearance of TAXANDRIA. Many merchants in the city are trying to have its old name reinstalled, because it is easier for foreigners. See BOUCHINEY, Irina BRENTANO, DELPHINIUM, EQUISETUM, FERRISS Hotel, HEAD OFFICE OF ASSURANCES GÉNÉRALES, LIBUSSA, PALAIS DES MILLE FEUX, SKY SWITCHERS and RICARDO.

Book of Samaris. A tome resting on an altar at the hearth of that city. Its ornate text is difficult to read, and full of nearly cabalistic references (MS).
Books. They are held in high respect in most Obscure Cities, although there is a tendency to value the object rather than the words (GC). Among the exceptions we note CERNOVADA, where a LIBRARY was converted into an orphanage (EC, GC), and MYLOS, where even Jules VERNE's books are burned if deemed a nuisance to production (RA). See also BIBLIOTHERAPY, FRIEDRICH, SCROLLBOOKS, TURIN and ULTIMATE BOOK.
| Borges, Jorge Luis. Argentine writer
[1899-1986 AD], author of several very imaginative novels including, amongst others, TLÖN UQBAR ORBIS TERTIUS. He seems to have
influenced considerably the very nature of the existence of the Obscure Cities. It
is also mentionned at the MUNDANEUM that he was a
librarian, an important detail (MK). See Isidore LOUIS. Botanical Garden
of Montreal.
