Christin, P. With G.PELLERIN, he was the author of an article titled "Neither place nor time: Augustin Desombres and the esoteric tradition " (MAD).
Chronicles of the Obscure Cities. A term used in this dictionary to separate the structured Obscure Cities stories from the many other books, pamphlets, poster and objects belonging to the same universe, and that often exist only in very small number. In this particular context, the term "structured story" should be taken in a very loose sense.
Chula Vista. In the north-east part of the CONTINENT, near the METHYLEN SEA. It is probably a natural phenomenon, similar to the cliffs of ROTH, but those towering stalagmites, incredibly regular in shape, definitely bring to mind the image of a fossilised city. Part of the NETWORK remained above the site for a while (A, FU2, GC, MU). See also CHULA VISTA ISLANDS.
Chulae Vistae Islands. An archipelago, north-east of the CONTINENT (GC). See also CHULA VISTA and FOUGIVORUS AQUATICUS.

Cities of the Fantastic. Name under which the Obscure Cities are known in their American translation. Four albums have been translated so far: Les murailles de Samaris (The Great Walls of Samaris), La fièvre d'Urbicande (Fever in Urbicand), La Tour (The Tower) and Brüsel (Brüsel). See also INTERNET.
City of a Hundred Steeples (The).
Old nickname of MONTREAL,
more rarely used today, but still valid, as churches are very numerous in that city.
City of a Thousand Towers (The). Common nickname of Obscure KØBENHAVN (RA).
City of the Book. An immense building shaped like a book, in the suburbs of BRÜSEL. Built in only two weeks, it was the destination of the ORPHANS OF CERNOVADA (EC). See LIBRARIES.
Clara [Morel]. Younger sister of ANNA. She never came back from a trip to SAMARIS (MS, ACO). See CARLA.
Claudius. A resident of the TOWER, last defender of the established order in his sector (LT).

term: grimpelle.] A kind of saddle with a leg-powered gear system and
brakes, used by the GAMMES to move along vertical cables

of Immaterial Studies.
An institution supposedly located in LUNA.
It is mentionned in a non-authenticated document about TIME,
discovered during the First OBSCURE
CONVENTION. A certain Professor STONE may be
its director.
College of the Sages. One of the official Chambers ruling ALAXIS (GC).
College Sainte-Barbe. An establishment, probably located in PÂHRY, where Ernest DERSENVAL distinguished himself as a student. He scopped all prizes, including those of the gymnastic class (U).
Commission of High Instances. The ruling council of URBICANDE (FU). See also RAPPORTER and URBICANDE AVENUES.
Commissioner. Title of the members of the COMMISSION OF HIGH INSTANCES of URBICANDE (FU).
Comos. A hair-growing balm. For a while, Magasinet of KØBENHAVN was offering a reward of 10,000 pounds to bald people who would have used it for three weeks without getting a result (EC).
Compensations Exchange. A financial institution that sponsored L'ÉCHO DES CITÉS for many years (EC).
Compère, Christophe. Belgian researchist who maintains that he has been lucky enough to regularly meet somebody running back and forth between BRUSSELS and the Obscure World. If ever found to be authentic, the tales supplied by this traveller would bring a new light to several aspects of the CONTINENT's folklore, as well as some chapters of the history of our own world. Mister Compère is the instigator of the Second OBSCURE CONVENTION, and has also posted on his INTERNET site some documents related to the nature of the PASSAGES between the two universes. Conferences. SCHUITEN and PEETERS frequently hold public discussions about their stay in the World of the Cities.
Continent (The). The main body of dry land in the Obscure World, the rest being made only of islands. A map briefly seen in ROBICK's office shows that there may have once been another vast continent, but modern CARTOGRAPHY seems to ignore it. This may have been TAXANDRIA before the GREAT CATACLYSM (FU, SEP). See ARD, ARMILIA, CAYLUS ARCHIPELAGO, CHULA VISTA, IBLIS, IVALO, LAKE NEMO, MYSTERIUM MAGNUM, ORSENNA and YLIASTER.

Cordélia. Heroine from La SENTENCE (GC).
Corot, Camille. French painter, born in Paris (1796-1875 AD). He is considered to be one of the great masters of the 19th Century, for his landscapes as well as his portraits. His style is simple, sensitive and pure (PLI). A PASSEUR (A).
Correard (Cape). Its waters are reputed to be safe, but a storm nevertheless sank the ship BATTISTA not far from there (EC).

| Cosmopolis. An
amusement park of ALAXIS (EP). A
popular tourist attraction, it is one of the few places on the CONTINENT
where good hotels can be found (GC). Its entrance is a close match
for the one of the TIVOLI parc, near our world's Copenhagen (QG). Coudon, Didier. Obscure Historian (GC). Council. The ruling body of XHYSTOS (MS), made of 21 permanent members, designated by the common agreement of those already in position (A). See STREETS OF BRUSSELS. Courbet, Gustave. French painter, born in Ornans (1819-1877 AD). Friend of Proudhon, he became the leader of the Realist School (Bonjour, Monsieur Courbet; l'Enterrement à Ornans; la Remise des chevreuils; l'Atelier du peintre). He was condemned in 1871 AD for having participated in the Commune revolt and exiled himself (PLI). One of the PASSEURS painted in the company of Giovanni BATTISTA (A). |

Crémont, Matthieu. A reporter for La LUMIÈRE. He covered the closing of L'ÉCHO DES CITÉS (EC).
Croupiers. One of the associations that, for all practical purposes, rules ALAXIS (GC).
Crown. Currency of the TOWER (LT).
Cube. The initial element of the NETWORK. Measuring about 15 centimeters (6 inches) on each side, it was discovered by FRIEDRICH and KLAUS on the VON HARDENBERG construction site, in URBICANDE (FU). A similar object was found amongst the belongings of Augustin DESOMBRES, but it was probably a copy made by ROBICK (MAD).
Curmos. A City near SAMARIS (MS).
Cycle. Division of TIME in the HOLLOW EARTHS. Most likely equivalent to the rotation of a world on itself, but we do not know if the duration is the same for all the planets in the system. OLIVE's world took 100 LOMBES to rotate. For ZARA, a cycle is about 18 lombes long (C, N, TC, Z). See also PERIOD.
