ÉCHO DES CITÉS (L'). A large size album, published by Casterman in 1993. The periodical (A Suivre) had previously published several pages of that work as a folding supplement, but there are several differences between the two prints. It can be considered to be the eight installment of the CHRONICLES.
Echo des Cités (L') [Echo of the Cities]. A major Obscure newspaper. The first issue was published in April 719 AT, with an editorial by Elmar Obstig von Offenstein. The latter was replaced less than two years later by Stanislas SAINCLAIR, originally an assistant draft editor. Sinclair remained at the head of the paper until it folded, in 762 AT. First published only from TRAHMER, the Echo soon became extremely popular, and was eventually printed in five languages all over the CONTINENT (EC). See ARDAN, COMPENSATIONS EXCHANGE, GO, LOHÉAC, La LUMIÈRE, SARAZIN and SCHREDER.
| Eclipse. [1] In ASTRONOMY, the disappearance of a celestial body caused by the passage of a moon or planet between that body and the eye of the observer. In our world, the most spectacular kind is the solar eclipse, caused by the MOON. An occultation of this type is visible only from a narrow band accross the surface of the Earth, as demonstrated by the total eclipse of August 11, 1999 AD, the first to occur in Belgium since 1433 AD. [2] In the Obscure World, the event of September 2, 747 AT seems to have had an altogether different cause. This eclipse was visible simultaneously in ALAXIS and at MOUNT MICHELSON, two points separated by several MEGAFATHOMS from each other. It has been suggested that the body responsible may have been our own planet, momentarily rendered visible to the inhabitants of the OTHER WORLD (EP, GC). |

Ecole des Mines. [School of Mines] An institution located in GALATOGRAD, where the young Klaus VON RATHEN learned his trade (U).
Effi. A big black DOG with blue eyes, "leaning" like the other companions of MARY LA PENCHÉE (MLP).
| Effinier, Sébastien. One
of the participants to the First OBSCURE
CONVENTION. Sébastien is also the person who translates into French the
content of the "Web of the Obscure Cities" INTERNET

Elasto-fragmentoplast. The first variety of QUARX discovered by Professor BENAYOUN. Its appearance and mating habits are most curious. The two sexes show a pronounced and complementary sexual dysmorphism. Their union produces an offspring that can easily be mistaken for an ordinary pill or tablet. The male tends to confuse anything round for a female, hence a profusion of broken objects in houses where this creature is present (GC, LQ).

Elbasec, Dimitri. A writer well known in the Obscure Cities, residing on the 7th level of a GALATROGRAD building (EC). Author of the short story Les Remords [Remorses] (GC).
Elephant. No living specimen is known on the CONTINENT; but those pachyderms are nevertheless held in high esteem in PÂHRY, for it is said that they allowed this city to win an important battle in the past (ECDA). If the LIGHTED CITY of Paris does not seem to be adorned with many representations of this animal, there have been however several such projects. Researchist Christian Ramette has discovered the plans of an inhabitable elephant dating back to the reign of Louis the Fifteenth, and that would have been erected on the Place de l'Etoile. A certain Monsieur Bonaparte also seriously considered being entombed in a fountain-elephant in the middle of the Place de la Bastille. This last project even reached the scale model stage, and writer Victor Hugo hid one of his characters in it (INT). See also FAUNA and MURALS.

Elkaïm, Dr. Mony. Famous PSYCHO-SYSTEMATICIAN of MUKHA, or perhaps from our own world, known for his work on Obscure pathologies, such as XHYSTITE and the SAMARIS EFFECT; he treated Franz BAUER for the latter (EC, GC). Like Joseph POELAERT, he seems so deeply anchored in the reality of both worlds that we can rightfully wonder if we are not dealing with two distinct individuals. See also AUTOUR DES CITÉS OBSCURES and MIROIR SANS FIN.
Elysée-Palace. Former palace of the PÂHRY government. Closed by BERTHELOT, it was eventually re-converted into a music-hall (GC).
Emotion Theaters. Generally speaking, to display emotions in public borders on the pornographic in the Obscure World. Some quasi-clandestine establishments specialize in that form of entertainment, but they are difficult to find (GC).
ENCYCLOPÉDIE DES TRANSPORTS PRÉSENTS ET À VENIR [Encyclopaedia of Present and Future Transportation]. An almost impossible-to-find work by Axel WAPPENDORF. Re-printed in our world in 1988 AD (ACO, ETPV).
| Enfant de Phbus (L')
[The Child of Phbus]. A painting by Augustin DESOMBRES,
much critised when it was first unveiled to the public. An early sign of the
artist's connection with the Obscure Cities, it is probably the one that allowed Jules VERNE to cross over to the Other World. See LEJARDINIER and PHBUS. ENFANT PENCHÉE (L'). [The Leaning Child] Volume Ten of the CHRONICLES. Publication in (A Suivre) started in issue 193 (February 1994), and the album was released by Casterman in 1996 AD. Enfants de Choeur (Les) [A play on words involving "coeur" (heart), "choeur" (choir) and "enfants" (children)]. Name of a cabaret in ALAXIS, where beautiful young girls sing completely naked (GC). |

Explorers. We owe to several intrepid persons the discovery of many of the more remote corners of the CONTINENT and its surroundings. Amongst the most famous names, we can mention the following:
Expo '67.
The World Fair of 1967 AD, held in MONTREAL to celebrate the Centennial of the Canadian
Confederation. There are numerous clues pointing to possible temporary PASSAGES that might have opened during the event. The pavilion
of the German Federal Republic, for instance, was strongly reminiscent of the tents of the
KAMOUR BLHYR; the Dutch pavilion seemed surrounded by
its own NETWORK, and a whole pavilion was allocated to Man in
the City, while another was called the LABYRINTH (GOE, PE).
Even twenty years after the event, the old French pavilion was the site of a brief
connection with the FIXORAMA of ALAXIS
(GC). See also HABITAT '67.
