"F". The line of the FILIPUS Princes of TAXANDRIA has for an emblem a double "F" arranged in the form of a "T" (SEP). Inexplicably, this symbol, which must have been created after the GREAT CATACLYSM, can be found on the hats of the soldiers guarding the CELESTIAL BULLET, near MOUNT MICHELSON (EP).

Fabritius, Carel. An Obscure painter, of whom some work can be found in the FREDDY DE VROUW FOUNDATION. Author, among others, of a painting titled Le MIROIR SANS FIN. The name may possibly be a pseudonym used by Augustin DESOMBRES during his stay in the World of the Cities (GC).

Facadism. The architectural practice of including an older front building in a new construction. Extensively used in both BRÜSEL and BRUSSELS (GC), as well as in MONTREAL. See also POSTERISM and DISPLAYISM.

Faille (La) [The Fault]. A fresco by Augustin DESOMBRES. 280 x 380 cm, 1905 AD (MAD).

Faliu (Mister). See CAUDRON-PHALÈNE.

Faliu, Odile.  Commisionner at the Bibliothèque nationale, with an interest in all the manifestations of the imaginary.   She has published, in 1985 AD at Albin Michel, Machines à rêver, receuil d'inventions  XVIe-XIXe siècle [Dream Machines, a Compilation of Inventions 16th-19th Century], and is the co-author of a Science Fiction retrospective album titled Le Futur Antérieur, Flammarion, 1993 AD.

Falstaff (The).   A fahionable coffee house in the center of BRUSSELS.   Its décor, and the fact that it was a meeting place for obscurologists at least twice, suggest that it is a point of PASSAGE.   See COMRE and OBSCURE CONVENTION.

pFalstaff.jpg (15360 octets)

Fälztafff. gris.gif (1157 octets)  According to the participants to the Second OBSCURE CONVENTION, it is a very popular café located in BRÜSEL.  Its interior decoration is virtually the same as that of the FALSTAFF in BRUSSELS, so much so that one can make the PASSAGE without noticing it.  The factors that must be brought together for this transfer to take place are apparently numerous and submitted to intricate rules.  The staff of both establishments is used to see visitors from the OTHER WORLD and knows the procedure to send back those who have crossed by accident (CC, PB).

Fanelles. Winged humanoids similar to FANNAUX, but apparently of a more subtle nature. They are all female-looking and can move between various dimensional planes, and possibly even in TIME. Like QUARXS, they cannot be seen with the naked eye; only photography allows to register their presence. We know that they copulate in flight during great meetings (C). See CHARDONNAY.

pFanelles.jpg (17279 octets)

Fanette. A GAMME (TC, Z). See GINA.

Fannaux. Creatures of human appearance, with bird wings instead of arms. They can move freely between the HOLLOW EARTHS, and some of their inhabitants use their services to move from one world to another. All those that we have seen so far are apparently male; they are obviously related to FANELLES, but it is hard to be sure that they are of the same species.  The term has benn rendered as "insects" in some translations (Z, N).

Fantoscope. Attraction in COSMOPOLIS (EP).

Farantino. See GOLFO FARANTINO.

Fathom.  See MEGAFATHOM.

Fauna.  Taken as a whole the faune of the Obscure World appears to be less diverse than that of the LIGHTED WORLD.  This is due in part to the fact that animal husbandry is almost unknown on the CONTINENT, where vegetarians dominate.  It should be noted that vast areas outside the cities remain unexplored, and the existence of several of the species listed below may be rather dubious (PGC, GC).

Filipus. A line of two-headed princes descended from Irina BRENTANO or her duplicate. They lived in reclusion, unseen in their PALACE in TAXANDRIA. They were always counted two at a time (One Dash Two, Three Dash Four, and so on...). See also "F" (SEP).

Filipus Seven Dash Eight. Princes of TAXANDRIA in the days of AIMÉ. Immobile and silent, only their shadow was to be seen (SEP). See also PIERRE and DANY.

Fixorama. A form of entertainment developed in ALAXIS, based on the projection of static images. The viewing room is by itself very popular with spectators because of its floor, made of soft cobblestones (GC). It gives a general feeling not unlike that of the streets of TAXANDRIA after the GREAT CATACLYSM, which would tend to indicate that this country may have kept some contacts with the rest of the Obscure World, possibly through MARIEVILLE. An exact copy of the Fixorama, conceived by François SCHUITEN, was built in our world and lasted a few months in 1988 AD, during the Cités-Cinés exhibit of MONTREAL (ACO). See CITÉ DES OMBRES and EXPO '67.

Flora.   Obscure vegetation has several characteristics distinguishing it from that of the LIGHTED WORLD, but it is difficult to separate the natural features from those introduced by centuries of tampering.  The inhabitants of the CONTINENT, who are skilled botanists, have managed to obtain extraordinary results, especially regarding size and speed of growth (GC, MAD, PGC, RA).  See also FORESTS, GARDENS, GREENHOUSE, JUNGLES, VEGETALISTIC STYLE and URFORMEN DER KUNST.   Balik, habitrees and vinois are to be found in the HOLLOW EARTHS.

Forgotten of Blossfeldtstad (The). Karl and Emmeline NIERENDORF, who were the only ones bypassed by the wave of reconstruction that swept their city. The event inspired a naive - and somewhat inaccurate - painting that nevertheless became very popular. Albert CHAMISSO had a reproduction hung in his apartment (GC, ODH).

Foucault, Léon. French physicist born in Paris (1819-1868 AD). He invented the gyroscope, demonstrated, with the help of a pendulum, that the Earth rotates, and discovered induced currents in metallic bodies. He determined experimentally the speed of LIGHT (PLI). He repeated his pendulum experiment in the waiting hall of the PALAIS DE JUSTICE of BRUSSELS and in the chapel of ARTS ET MÉTIERS (GC).
