| Haarlem. A city in Holland where a
point of PASSAGE can apparently be found (GC). Habitree. Habitation integrated in the structure of a living tree (or the other way around) used by the PEOPLE OF THE FORESTS on the HOLLOW EARTH of VÉDRA. They are considered to be amongst the 333 Wonders of the Universe (AS#11). The most famous have been designed by Master Builder LUC S. (GC). Habitat '67. |

Halley, Charles. A French engineer who, in the '30s AD, suggested an ingenious aerial propulsion mode, surprisingly similar to a concept by Axel WAPPENDORF. Modern experts in our world believe that the idea is a valid one, provided that the deflecting sail can be made sufficiently strong.

Hamelin, Mrs. René. A person residing on QUAI AU FOIN, in BRÜSEL, in April 719 AT. She published an ad in the first issue of L'ÉCHO DES CITÉS, urgently asking to find the architects METZLEUX-DEGUER, the contractor J.HANNEUX and the house painters BUSBY-GERMAIN. She described her position as "desperate" (EC). See also AMELIN.
Hanneux, J. A contractor of BRÜSEL actively sought by Mrs. HAMELIN.
Hats. In MYLOS, the wearing of hats is subject to a strict hierarchical code that suffers no exception, and supervisors are advised never to let theirs get out of their reach, even when they are sleeping (GC).
Head Office of Assurances Générales [General Insurances]. A beautiful example of the VEGETALISTIC STYLE, a short distance outside BLOSSFELDTSTAD (GC). See ASSURANCES GÉNÉRALES.
Heliotropes (Avenue of). A street of BLOSSFELDTSTAD where Sara CHAMISSO moved, with all the household furniture, after having left her husband (ODH). See STREETS OF BRUSSELS.
Helix-Slicer. A security system used on NOGEGON. As the name implies, it slices intruders in a spiral pattern (N).
Helmut. An INSPECTOR in the dirigible plant of MYLOS where the young FRIEDRICH was working (RA). See DINESEN.
Hergé. Nom de plume of the belgian BANDE DESSINÉE author Georges Rémi (1907-1983 AD). At least one of his albums, l'Etoile Mystérieuse, has been seen in the Obscure Universe (HH).

Hermepolis. "The Town of Hermes". Name of several cities in ancient Egypt. See TEMPLE OF HERMEPOLIS.
Heuvelmans. A member of the Obscure FAUNA that may very well be purely imaginary (PGC).

Hierarchs. The noble class of ALAXIS. Their role is now mainly symbolic (GC, INT). See BANDOLINI and CANTORINI.
High College. One of the Chambers that rule ALAXIS, at least officially (GC).
High Instances. See COMMISSION OF HIGH INSTANCES.
Hildegardia Millenari. A particular genus of trees, of gigantic size. Only a few specimens are left in the FOREST OF ZOGECÂR (MU).
Hollow Earths. A group of seven planets that follows a set of laws of physic different that those that we know, especially regarding GRAVITY. They have a special affinity with the Obscure Cities, and the TRAMWAY 81 runs in several of those worlds (GC). TIME is divided in PERIODS, CYCLES and LOMBES. At least one of those planets, OLIVE's, seems to be of artificial origin (TC, Z). See BALIK, FANNAUX, FOG CUTTERS, GAMMES, NELLE, NOGEGON, VÉDRA, XAM, ZARA and ZÉDRA.
| Horse. An animal almost extinct on the CONTINENT, probably following a ritual slaughter several centuries ago. It can still be found as a draft animal only in SODROVNO-VOLDACHIA and in remote regions. The Obscure horse seems to have an ancestor different than that of the LIGHTED WORLD, and it may be a case of parallel evolution (PGC, GC). See FAUNA and YLIASTER. |

Horatio. A MAINTAINER of The TOWER who, victim of solitude, slipped into insanity. His sector was next to Giovanni BATTISTA's (LT).
Horeau, Paul Dufournet. An architect from our world, the master behind the reconstruction of ALAXIS. He was at the end of his life when ROBICK this city in his youth (GC).
Horta, Victor (Baron). Belgian architect, born in Gand (1861-1947 AD). A pioneer of the "MODERN STYLE", he was one of the first to use iron and concrete (in Brusels: the Tassel and Horta houses, Solvay Hostel [1895 AD], Palais des Beaux-Arts [1922 AD]) (PLI). Horta et le style des nouilles. [Horta and the Noodle Style] Title of a book by C.HUYSMANS (EC). See ART NOUVEAU.
Hostellerie. The only Inn of SAMARIS (MS).
Hôtel-Dieu. A church-sponsored hospital in Old BRÜSEL, close to the PALACE OF THE THREE POWERS. The treatments recommended to Constant ABEELS during his stay included application of leeches and ingestion of minced fox lungs (B). See DEMOLDER.
