Iancu, Virgil. Director of the movie Le DERNIER PLAN (DP), which has been presented as a documentary on writer Constantin DOLINESCU. Informations regarding Virgil are not consistant. According to some, he was born in Brasov (Romania) in 1975 AD. If we are to believe others, his real name is Florin Piersic Jr. There are even unconfirmed rumors making the name a pseudonym for Benoît PEETERS, who is officially the producer of the movie (INT). Language note: in French, a Movie Director is called un réalisateur; which means, litterally, "one who makes it real".
Iblis. [1] A large island in the SEA OF FAREWELLS, west of the URBICANDE peninsula. Certain rumours indicate that it might be populated entirely with Siamese twins (GC), but this is perhaps only a misconception due to the fact that PIERRE and DANY, of the ROBERTSON CIRCUS, wore that name on their shirt (EP). More reliable information mention that SHIPWRECKERS may haunt its coasts (A2). [2] A defunct company from our world. It produced the movie Taxandria. The word means "Devil", in Arabic.

Inauguration manquée (L') [The Spoiled Inauguration]. A fresco by DESOMBRES, showing the inauguration of the AUTOGIRE. A point of PASSAGE, it was visible from the Obscure World when it was lit in ours. Axel WAPPENDORF, who met Desombres, found it a painful reminder (MAD).
Inspector (The). A high ranking official, in charge of maintaining the order of The TOWER in all respects. Around 450 AT the position was obviously vacant, and the Inspector had practically become the stuff of legend for the last inhabitants of the city-building (LT).
Inspectors. Much feared in MYLOS, where they have wide powers to maintain production levels (LT, RA, MAD). See RENARD.
Institut Central des Archives. [Central Archives Institute] The institution where Isidore LOUIS used to work (A). We are not quite sure to which world it really belongs.
Inter-City Exhibits. Major events where the various Cities display their wealth and their culture. Two have been held in PÂHRY, in 719 and 750 AT, and the second one was an immense success (GC). The one intended for the CAYLUS archipelago never took place (EC). See Obscure EXPO, PAVILION OF BOOKS and PAVILION OF LANDSCAPES.
Internet. The electronic communication system of our planet seems most sensitive to contacts with the Obscure World. At least one AUTOMATICAL BRAIN appears to be connected to it, and Axel WAPPENDORF has found a way to use the telephone network to send messages back and forth. The ARCHIVIST maintains the main site of urbicande.be, and Joseph LE PERDRIEL also posts the result of his research on the Web. Like the Cities themselves, those sites are constantly growing and changing (INT). See La CITÉ DES OMBRES, the LAETITIA and NETWORK.
Intransigeant (L') [The Intractable]. A newspaper, probably fictitious, seen in La CITÉ DES OMBRES.
| Invention Crusoë (L'). [1] The last frescoe painted by DESOMBRES in 1906 AD (MAD). The title always baffled the experts. [2] First novel of Constantin DOLINESCU. Published in Romania in 1967 AD, it had much impact in this country (DP). |

| Inventor. An anonymous character, whose portrait was found in the Augustin DESOMBRES estate. It is not specified if it was painted by that artist, but it does not appear to be done in his usual style. He may possibly be the conceptor of the GRAPHOPHONE (MAD). It is remarkable that the authors of the catalog for the DESOMBRES auction, who were from our own world, never did notice his ressemblance with Ernest SOLVAY. |

Invincible (The). A high performance car perfected by Axel WAPPENDORF. Capable of reaching up to 340 MEGAFATHOMS an hour, its development was for a while halted by DE SAUNIER, who was afraid that criminals might use it to escape the law (ETPV, GC).

A group of SODROVNO-VOLDACHIAN dissidents. Its
members never stopped demanding freedom of speach despite numerous imprisonment sentences
(GC). Ithy. Name of the southern half of an island in the SEA OF SILENCES, the other half being known as ARD (GC). Ivalo [Yvalo]. A vast island, south-west of the CONTINENT. It features a large volcanic range over which the NETWORK parked in a late stage of its development (FU2, GC, MU). |

A building in BRUSSELS. Long abandonned, its stones were
carefuly numbered, dismounted, and then crushed... An identical construction seems
to have known the same fate in BRÜSEL (B, MFP).
