K4S. A locomotive designed in XHYSTOS. It won the Grand Invention Prize at the First INTER-CITY EXHIBIT (GC).

Kadaré, Ismaïl. Author of Le palais des rêves [The Dream Palace]. See KHADARÉ.

Kadjerchoun. A name linked to that of KALAK by Filinor VON KATSEFF while swearing (PFVK).

Kafka, Franz.  German-speaking Czech writer, born in Prague (1883-1924 AD), author of novels (le Procès, le Château) and a Diary that express man's despair faced with the absurdity of existence (PLI).  Although his relationship with the Obscure World is not clear, it cannot be denied; as proven by the image on the right, which is part of a poster made by François SCHUITEN.

Kah. A region north of the SEPTENTRIONAL JUNGLE, bordering the METHYLEN SEA (GC).

Kalak (Great). A name called upon for both blessing and cursing by Filinor VON KATSEFF. Probably a divinity or some religious figure (PFVK). See also KADJERCHOUN.

Kalin.  A DOG living in the CENTER FOR CARTOGRAPHY, formerly property of a Mister WALTER and adopted by Roland DE CREMER (FI).  Pets are barely tolerated on the CONTINENT, but are apparently more common in SODROVNO-VOLDACHIA, where  HORSES are still being used (GC).

Kamour Blhyr. A vast semi-arid region in the South of the CONTINENT. Part of it extends up to the GREEN LAKE. Most noticeably, it is inhabited by dark-skinned people, who are very rare in the Obscure World. Their civilisation is almost rural, which makes them strange to their city-dwelling neighbours (GC). Kaplan, Frédéric.   Author of a French language INTERNET site on the Obscure Cities that shows considerable research and analysis (INT). http://www.captage.com/kaplan/doc/schuiten/index.html

Karpoff Circus. Entertainers of some fame in the world of Filinor VON KATSEFF (PFVK).

Kempeneers, Michel.   Belgian recherchist living in Leuven.  A precious source of information on local terms, and a very dedicated proof reader.  He conducted and interview with SCHUITEN and PEETERS for the De Standaard newspaper of April 22, 1999 (MK).  One of the participants to the first two OBSCURE CONVENTIONS.

Kepler, Johannes. German astronomer born near Weil (Wurtemberg) [1571-1630 AD]. He discovered several of the essential principles of planetary orbits, and his work was the basis on which Isaac Newton built his theory of universal gravitation. He is revered in the Obscure World (GC). See TEMPLE OF KEPLER.

Khadaré Gulf. In the north-west of the CONTINENT, it gives access to CALVANI from the NEPTUNIC OCEAN (GC). See KADARÉ and MOSQUE WITH THE BELL TOWER.

Khar War. Assaults of the city of XHYSTOS by the inhabitants of its own suburbs in 703-704 AT. Probably supported by a rival city, this war ended with the victory of the downtown core. It is worth mentioning that when Franz BAUER left for SAMARIS, in 696 AT, the outlying sectors of Xhystos were already in ruin and dangerous to cross (MS, EC, GC).

Klaus. [1] Foreman on the VON HARDENBERG construction site, in URBICANDE. With FRIEDRICH, he brought the CUBE to ROBICK (FU). [2] See Klaus VON RATHEN.

København. [1] Obscure City closest to the Polar Circle, but enjoying a micro-climate that allows it to remain inhabitable. It is commonly called the City of A Thousand Towers and, in FRIEDRICH's mind's eye, they are indeed numerous, incredibly tall, and all different from each other (RA). [2] Danish name of Copenhagen in our world. See also TIVOLI.

København (The). Name of the zeppelin imagined by the young FRIEDRICH (RA). See BILIBINE, BRYAN, Hella JACOBSEN, LARSSON, MOLTCHANOV and ODILON.

Koelber Foundation. Seated in a manor formerly belonging to Mary VON RATHEN in MYLOS, it used to be connected with the A.DESOMBRES MUSEUM. Among the exhibits can be found the camera of Vigoleis KOELBER (GC).

Koelber, Vigoleis. A Dutch appraiser and auctioneer, partner of Arnold BUCH. He accidentally passed in the world of the Obscure Cities while visiting the A.DESOMBRES MUSEUM, and allowed Mary VON RATHEN to crossed into our own world (MAD). See also KOELBER FOUNDATION and LIGHT.

Knights of the Tower. One of the more famous Obscure sects (GC).

Krijs. A high official of BRÜSEL in October 746 AT. During the inauguration of the Obscure PORTE DE HAL subway station, he angrily left; quite furious to see that the old tramways were coming out of the walls (ACO).

Kunkely, Bronislaw. A withdrawn little boy, gifted with paranormal powers. One of the ORPHANS OF CERNOVADA (EC, GC). See ARMILIA.
