gris.gif (1157 octets)= Unconfirmed information

L'.  For those unfamiliar with the French language, L' stands for Le (masc.) or La (fem.) in front of words starting with a vowel.  The plural form is Les in all cases.  The meaning is the same as the English "The", but it is used more liberally by francophones.   Following usual dictionary convention, preceding articles are generally omitted from titles for indexing purposes.

Labyrinth (The). A remain of the PÂHRY INTER-CITY EXHIBIT of 750 AT (GC). gris.gif (1157 octets) One of the pavilions of EXPO '67 had the same name, but it was a maze of ideas rather than corridors. See also AMIENS.

Lake Nemo. Perfectly round, it is located in the exact geographical center of the CONTINENT (GC). Probably named in honour of Captain NEMO (EC). Although a connection with a little boy named NEMO McCay cannot be ruled out, as he too was a great explorer of strange countries (ACO).

Lætitia la Désaxée [Laetitia-of-the-Lost-Axis]. Stage name of Mary VON RATHEN, when she was part of the ROBERTSON CIRCUS (EP).

Laetitia (The). An enormous vehicle moving around on threads. Designed by WAPPENDORF to permit Mary VON RATHEN to reach distant YPIGI, while carrying the delicate apparatus allowing contact with our world (INT). See LWETITIW.

Laura la Noire [Black Laura]. Stage name of a famous cabaret dancer of ALAXIS; almost certainly DURAINE DE MONTIGNAC.

Lessing, Albert. A name often encountered, both in the Obscure Universe and ours.   It is impossible to know how many distinct persons are involved.  [1] The Administrator of the VILLERS library. Probably a pseudonym given by Benoît PEETERS to the victim of an Obscure crime (BV). [2] Librarian of SAMAROBRIVE. He maintains having met Jules VERNE, which is quite possible (EC). [3] Author of an article on James WELLES, published in Le Soir of March 6, 1994 AD (GC).  [4]  The producer, and possibly the host, of the TV show Le TEMPS ET LES OEUVRES (DB).  See STREETS OF BRUSSELS.

Liber Meteurum. [Book of the Meteors, in Pig Latin.]   Another tome in the library of Elias Aureolus PALINGENIUS (LT).

Libraries. They are extremely important in the Obscure World, both as buildings and as collections of books. The is one of gigantic proportions located in the archipelago of CAYLUS and of mysterious origin. The survivors from the BATTISTA were washed inside (EC) and Isidore LOUIS perhaps gained access to it (A). The library of Elias Aureolus PALINGENIUS was equally famous, although of a more reasonable size (LT, GC). Between those extremes, we note the existence of the large books of the MAISON IMAGINAIRE collection, formerly displayed in the MUSÉE DES OMBRES. The Obscure City of VILLERS is built around its municipal library (GC). CERNOVADA showed a rare case of library converted into an orphanage (EC). In the suburbs of BRÜSEL, there is a CITY OF THE BOOK in the middle of which stands a library shaped like a book (EC), and a similar project for ALTA-PLANA received an award (GC). See BOOKS.

Lidiaux, Pierre. [1]   Born in BRUSSELS in 1928 AD. Author of a book titled Le DOSSIER B, he was certain that the WIERTZ Museum, in Brussels, had a link with BRÜSEL. He eventually became paranoid and disappeared in 1974 AD (GC).  The rumors making him Benoît PEETERS in disguise do not bear the weight of analysis:  when Le Dossier B was published, in the early '60s, Benoît was a boy, much too young to pass as this older man.   The very name Lidiaux is startling in French, as it is pronounced the same as the expression "the idiot".   See also LEGUEBE.   [2]  A character from Benoît PEETERS' first novel, Omnibus.

Lidiaux.jpg (17329 octets)

Pierre Lidiaux, in front of the MAISON DU PEUPLE.

Ligam. The only male kept by the GAMMES for reproduction purposes. Gammes generally say "the" Ligam; in part because he is the only one of his kind, but also because they tend to view the bloated creature as a thing rather than a person (TC). The Ligam is maintained in a state of artificial youth thanks to the energy collected in the ZARANITES' hives. (Z).

Light. The intensity of light seems to play an important role in some forms of PASSAGE to the Obscure Cities. The lightning system in the A.DESOMBRES MUSEUM was controlled by a timer to avoid an overload that would have turned the frescoes into unwanted warps. The flashbulbs of Vigoleis KOELBER generated exactly the required wavelength (MAD). It was the light of the rising or setting sun that allowed access to MOUNT ANALOGUE in our world. In URBICANDE, daylight was subject to a strange refraction phenomena (FU). "Light Baths" are considered therapeutic in SODROVNO-VOLDACHIA (GC). The names of scientists from our world who have worked on light are known to the Obscure people, which would tend to indicate that some manipulations can open a PASSAGE. The HOLLOW EARTHS apparently all have a powerful source of light at their core (C, N, TC, Z). See BIO-LIGHT, FOUCAULT, LUMIÈRE, MICHELSON and TEMPLOUX.

Lighted World.   [Original French term:  Monde Clair]  A neologism coined by Quentin GAUSSET to replace the overly ethnocentric "Our World".   Given the recent increase in traffic between the two universes, this is a perfectly logical step (QG).

Lighthouse of the World gris.gif (1157 octets) (original French term:  le Phare du Monde).   [1] A tower half a MEGAFATHOM high, central landmark of the Obscure EXPO (INT).  [2] A very similar project - not accepted - was submitted for the International Exhibition of Paris in 1937.  This building, if it had been constructed, would have been 770 meters (2,300 feet) high.

Lina. A young "leaning" woman from the MARY LA PENCHÉE tale. Mistakenly called Lisa in the original text (MLP).

Little Boutique of Mr. De Vrouw. See PETITE BOUTIQUE DE M. DE VROUW.

Lönnrot, Erik. A scientist who, with ARDAN, LODERER and WRONSKI, explored the MARAHUACA PIT (EC).

Louis, Isidore. Archive keeper, sub-section of Myths and Legends. Suspected of having stolen historical documents in BRUSSELS, his research eventually led him to find a PASSAGE to the Obscure World, where he kept on practising his trade in the city of ALTA-PLANA. We owe him several reports on the Obscure Cities (A, FU2, GC). See ARCHIVISTE and INSTITUT CENTRAL DES ARCHIVES.  Physically, he looks very much like BORGES.  See AISLE 1133 and STREETS OF BRUSSELS.

URBICANDE, it became independant in 2000 AD.  While it had a promising start, the organization developped beyond the capacities of its administrators and was dissolved on May 16th, 2001 AD.  See Philippe BLAMPAIN, INTERNET, Florence MAINGUET, MAISON IMAGINAIRE, PASSPORT, James G. ROOMS and TROMBINOSCOPE.

pLumiereSur.gif (21763 octets)

Luminas. gris.gif (1157 octets) An information journal about the Obscure World, published mostly for the benefit of the LIGHTED WORLD citizens, in order to fill the vacuum left by the disappearance of LUMIÈRE SUR LES CITÉS.   The information presented therein is varied, but perhaps not entirely reliable.  See TÉLÉPÉNOMBRATEUR.
