Micheline. Popular name for a tyre-mounted vehicle running on rails, built in the '30s AD by the Michelin Tyre Company. It bears a striking similarity to the TYRE-RAIL described by WAPPENDORF (ETPV, GC).

| Mons. A city in South-West Belgium, in the LIGHTED WORLD, and that may have a counterpart in the Obscure World. At the very least, it is certainly a site of PASSAGE, for the MUNDANEUM is located there, as well as a remarkable belltower (INT, LSLC). |
|
| Monsieur Raoul. A chimpanzee with a very human behaviour, member of the ROBERTSON CIRCUS (EP, MLP). See SERVAIS. |
Mont Analogue (Le). An unfinished novel by René Daumal, published in 1952 AD. It describes a mountain of our world, so high that its summit reaches another plane of existence. This peak is somewhere in the South Pacific; but it is invisible, its enormous mass being enough to curve the surrounding structure of space. Electrical devices are useless there and, just as in SAMARIS, it seems that photography is impossible. Analogical fauna and flora are noticeably different than that of the outside world. It is possible to reach or leave the island only at sunrise or sunset, for perpendicular sun LIGHT alone can briefly dispel the diffraction ring. The Mount is surrounded by small towns founded over a period of millennia by the crews of those who have attempted the climb; the descendants of the French teams are mostly concentrated in PORT-DES-SINGES (MA). See PÉRADAM and The TOWER.
Montgomery. A square that exists in BRÜSEL as well as in BRUSSELS (A).
Montreal. The main city of the province of Quebec, in Canada, famous for its eclectic architecture. Formerly known under the name of VILLE-MARIE. Perhaps because the cycle of seasons is sharper than elsewhere, the points of PASSAGE appear to be mostly of a transitory nature. They open for an exposition or a fair, for a few days or a few months, and then close up - sometimes forever. It is therefore recommended to visitors who wish to come back to be careful when crossing over to the Obscure World from that city. There are however a few more permanent doors, including the BOTANICAL GARDEN, the CANADIAN CENTER OF ARCHITECTURE, the CLOCK TOWER OF THE PORT, the NOTRE-DAME BASILICA, the SUN LIFE BUILDING, the TOWER OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MONTREAL and some subway stations. See also MARIEVILLE, MOUNT ROYAL, MURALS, NAMUR and TRAMWAY.
| Moon. It is quite astonishing to realize that the luminary of Obscure nights is apparently identical to the one that graces our own sky. Some have concluded that it is the same celestial body, and is in fact a PASSAGE point(GC). Michel ARDAN had even calculated the force necessary to send an inhabited projectile that far (ETPV), and WAPPENDORF was probably inspired by his work when he conceived the concept of the CELESTIAL BULLET (EP). |

Morel. See ANNA, CARLA, CLARA and MOREL'S INVENTION.
Morel's Invention. A novel by Aldofio Bioy Casares, published in 1940. In it is described an island where faithful recordings of dead people forever relive the same reality over and over again.

Mosque With the Bell Tower (The). A unique building of Tirana [Tiranë], Albania. According to the researches of Philippe Bonet, it could be a PASSAGE opening in the vicinity of the KHADARÉ GULF (INT).
| Motoaviette. One of the many vehicles used on the CONTINENT. Somewhat similar to the AUTOGIRE, it can however switch between road and aerial modes. The last PASSPORT delivered to citizens of our world had a section authorizing the bearer to drive or pilot this contraption (LSLC). |

Mount Analogue. [1] An Obscure landmark located on a vast island of the SEA OF SILENCES, directly south of SAMARIS (GC). It is not specified if this mountain is the same as the one described by René Daumal (see MONT ANALOGUE), or if the inhabitants of the Obscure Cities simply took inspiration from his novel. The Obscure mountain being apparently visible, the latter is more probable (MA). [2] The survivors from the BATTISTA took refuge on top of a gigantic book with that title (EC).
Mount Michelson. In the eastern part of the CONTINENT, north of ALAXIS (GC). The location of an astronomical observatory (EP). See also Albert MICHELSON.
Mount Royal. A lava dome in the center of the city of MONTREAL. Rather unexpected in the middle of an urban surrounding, it is heavily wooded and criss-crossed with numerous footpaths, some of which may be point of PASSAGE. See also TOWER OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MONTREAL.
Muhka. A City at the end of a deep gulf opening on the NEPTUNIC OCEAN. Major trading center linked to all the cities of the CONTINENT (RA). BRÜSEL was under its domination until 690 AT (GC).

MURAILLES DE SAMARIS (LES). [The Great Walls of Samaris] The first volume of the CHRONICLES of Obscure Cities, published as an album in 1983 AD, after a run in (A Suivre) from June to September 1982. The 1988 edition has an ending slightly different from the first (MS and MS2). See SAMARIS.
Murals. We know of at least two that have without a doubt a connection with the Obscure World, and are probably points of PASSAGE. One is located on MARCHÉ-AU-CHARBON Street, in BRUSSELS (below, left) (GC, INT), and the other in Angoulême, France (right, top) (INT) [See ELEPHANT]. MONTREAL also has several murals that may communicate with the Cities (right, bottom).
Museum. In TAXANDRIA, a place where forbidden machines were kept (SEP).
MUSÉE A. DESOMBRES (LE). [The A. Desombres Museum] Sixth volume of the CHRONICLES, published in 1990 AD. Unique for its inclusion of a soundtrack (MAD). See BRUZDOWICZ.
Musée des Ombres [Museum of the Shadows]. Located in Obscure PORRENTRUY. It re-opened in 719 AT after having been closed for several years, following strange events (EC). Quite amazingly, a travelling exhibit on CARTOONING had the very same name, and some of its elements apparently came from the Obscure World. No doubt a rare case of mobile point of PASSAGE, it has been seen in Angoulême, Sierre, BRUSSELS and Paris (ACO). See also LIBRARIES.
Musical City. Oscar FROBÉLIUS' pet project. It should have been built on the shore of the GREEN LAKE, but never took shape (EC).
Mylos. The most frightening of all Obscure Cities, where workers are integrated to the machines and production takes precedence over everything else. Its brick architecture is quite bland, and a multitude of chimneys constantly spew clouds of thick black smoke. Located on the west coast of the CONTINENT. See BRATSLAWSKY, CAUCHIE, FRAZER, KOELBER FOUNDATION, GWENDOLINE, INSPECTORS, LIZBAR, SAM, SEVEN DAYS OF, SUPREME GENERATOR, TERRIE, UQBAR, UNIQUE INDUSTRIAL CONSORTIUM and VON RATHEN.
Mylos pour mille ans [Mylos for a Thousand Years]. Title of a book written by Klaus VON RATHEN (GC).
| MYSTÈRE
D'URBICANDE (Le) [The Mystery of Urbicande]. A very rare
booklet, written by Professor DE BROCK and illustrated by DE LA BARQUE. Only 1900 copies were originally published in
BRÜSEL. One of them, with copious side notes by ROBICK, somehow reached our world and was reprinted in 1985 AD
(B, FU2, GC, LSLC, MU). Very convincing fakes are known to exist. Mystères du calendrier (Des) [Of the Mysteries of the Calendar]. A book by Professor Théophraste PYM. It mostly covers the meaning of the symbols found on Obscure WATCHES (DMDC). Published by the Institute of High Chronographical Studies of ARMILIA (EC, GC). |
|
Mysterium Magnum. "The Great Mystery". [1] Name of an unexplored region, located on the side of the Obscure World opposite to ARMILIA, equivalent to the South Pole (GC). [2] Title of a book in the library of Elias Aureolus PALINGENIUS (LT). See also STAMPS.
