Nadar [Félix Tournachon, a.k.a.]. French balloonist, photographer, draftsman and writer, born in Paris (1820-1910 AD). He took pictures of most of the famous people of his time, including Jules VERNE, and shot the first photographs ever taken from an airborne platform (1858 AD) (PLI). See ARDAN.

Namur. [1] A town in Belgium, south-west of BRUSSELS.  According to researcher Alex WILLEM, the space beneath its vast citadel is riddled with mysterious and forbidden tunnels that might very well be PASSAGES.   [2]  Name of a street in BRUSSELS, where can be found a little known MURAL that may have a link with the Obscure World.

Namur. gris.gif (1157 octets)[3] Subway station in MONTREAL, decorated with a tubular structure that looks like a twisted version of the NETWORK.   See also TEMPLOUX.

Nandi, Alok.   The Webmaster of the urbicande.be INTERNET site.  Hidden from the public at large, his work has been preserved on the CD-ROM L'OMBRE DU RÉSEAU.  A participant to the First OBSCURE CONVENTION.

Nastassja. Harp player at the Academy of Fine Arts of SODROVNI (EP). See AYMÉ.

Natan. An ARTRACER in DRAMARD. NELLE and OLIVE both fell in love with him (N).

Nelle. A GAMME of ZARA. Being of an inquisitive nature, she has visited several of the HOLLOW EARTHS (N, TC, Z). See LIVA, NATAN and OLIVE.

Nellen. Name given to NELLE during her stay in DRAMARD (N).

Nemo. In our world, a character created by Jules VERNE for his novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas. In the Obscure Cities, he is considered to be not only real, but also a great explorer. It is however quite possible that the person known under that name is none other than Verne himself (EC). See LAKE NEMO and SAMAROBRIVE.

Nemo [McCay]. A little boy who has found many PASSAGES to other worlds by way of dreaming. He may have briefly visited the Obscure World and met Evguenia RADISIC (INT).

Neo-Theosophes. One of the most influential of the various Obscure sects (GC).

Neptunic Ocean. The largest body of water on the Obscure World. Parts of it are reputed quite stormy and dangerous (GC).  See TRITON.

Nered (Pr). A scientist whose NETWORK theory was criticised by LOMS (MU).  See also BULLETIN.

Network. Sometimes also called The Web in English (original French word: Réseau ). A strange structure made of bars that seemed to be both mineral and vegetal in appearance. It developed from a CUBE that was discovered in URBICANDE in 735 AT. Following different laws of physic, its substance went through ordinary matter without displacing it. It grew to tremendous proportions, eventually reaching cosmic proportions and throwing in shambles the social fabric of many cities (FU). We know that part of the structure rose from the wave during the great equinoctial tide not far from the SODROVNI Cape, and it was also seen in ROTH and at the GREEN LAKE, as well as in the SEPTENTRIONAL and POZNAH Jungles, not to mention CHULA VISTA, the IVALO volcanic chain and the MARAHUACA Plateau (FU2, MU). Several mathematical formulas have been set up to calculate its evolution (GC) and Claude-Françoise BRUNON saw it as linked to our world's INTERNET (FU2). This last hypothesis is quite sound, for WAPPENDORF is known to have built a machine capable of sending messages to our world through the Obscure telephone system (INT). Newman, Max. Albert CHAMISSO by his real namme.  A former employee of ASSURANCES GÉNÉRALES, born in BLOSSFELDTSTAD; designer of astonishing shows based on shadow play C). It is also said that he was a lover of DURAINE DE MONTIGNAC.  See CITÉ DES OMBRES.

Newspapers. See ÉCHO DES CITÉS, GO, INTRANSIGEANT, LUMIÈRE and PRESENT.

New Urbicande. A reconstruction, on an island of the NEPTUNIC OCEAN, of the ancient city, destroyed by an earthquake. This project was realised by a former student of ROBICK, Gustav B. MARANJE, based on the urbatect's own plans. The "North Shore" was done according to the original project, something that was not done in URBICANDE itself. The new city can be reached only by air, the sea being quite dangerous in that area (GC).

Nierendorf, Karl and Emmeline. An elderly couple of BLOSSFELDTSTAD (EC). Following an administrative error, their house was the only building in the city that was not demolished and replaced by a modern construction (EC). They spent their last days at the EQUISETUM HOME (GC). See the FORGOTTEN OF BLOSSFELDTSTAD and Lucian ZABEL.

Nierendorf, Karl.  Owner of an art gallery who, in 1925 AD, was the first to display Karl BLOSSFELDT's photographs as art pieces in their own right (INT)

''Art and nature, the two great phenomena of our environment, are so closely related that the one is inconceivable without the other, and it will  never be possible to force them into the formula of a definition."

-Karl Nierendorf, 1928 (KB)

Ninth [9th] (The). gris.gif (1157 octets) Restaurant located on the ninth floor of the Eaton Department Store, in MONTREAL. Designed by architect Jacques Carlu in 1931 AD, it closely matches the dining room of the liner ILE DE FRANCE, which would indicate that it may be a PASSAGE similar to the one on the NORMANDIE. There may be, somewhere on an Obscure sea, a ship that awaits would-be travellers.  Considered one of the finest examples of ART DECO in Quebec, the restaurant was declared a protected cultural site after the bankruptcy of the main store in 1999 AD (LP).

Nobile, Umberto.   Italian general, airman and explorer, born in Lauro (Avelino) in 1885.   In 1928 AD, he explored the North Pole on board a DIRIGIBLE; lost off the coast of Spitzberg, he was rescued by a Soviet ice-breaker (PLI).   See Roald AMUNDSEN and Eugène ZAMIATINE.

Nogégon. The second planet of the HOLLOW EARTHS System. Its external crust is very thin, and is subject to rhythmic contractions, with an extremely low GRAVITY. Houses are build accordingly. This world's technology is very sophisticated in many areas, including androids and transportation, and its inhabitants lead strangely symmetrical lives (N). See AXYSMS, DRAMARD, EJECTOR, NATAN, RADAR, REFUSED, REUQUER, and "S".

NOGÉGON.  Third album of the HOLLOW EARTHS series, published in 1990 AD.   See  ANNA 808 ANNA eeS  .DA 0991 ni dehsilbup ,seires SHTRAE WOLLOH eht fo mubla drihT  .NOGÉGON

Normand, Jean-Pierre. gris.gif (1157 octets) A Canadian artist, born in 1958 AD in QUEBEC CITY and now living in MONTREAL. He specialises in science fiction and has illustrated several novels, including the Quebec edition of Paris au XXe Siècle, by Jules VERNE. His collection of superb first editions of books by that author would probably make him the richest man in the Obscure World, if he could find a way to bring it to the other side...

Normandie. French liner launched on October 29, 1932 AD. A floating monument to ART DECO, she is generally considered the most elegant of all ships, and was a rare example of mobile PASSAGE point. Everything indicates that it was linked to the VESSEL OF THE DESERT of Axel WAPPENDORF (RA). See also ILE DE FRANCE.

pNormandie.jpg (29047 octets)

Notre-Dame of Montreal Basilica. gris.gif (1157 octets) Built between 1824 and 1829 AD, one look on its interior is enough to be convinced that it is a PASSAGE. The general style is reminiscent of ALAXIS, but this church houses one of the largest organs in the world, and may thus be connected to the GREEN LAKE and the remains of FROBÉLIUS' instrument (EC, MHA2). See also CASAVANT.

Nova. An Obscure City in the Western Part of the CONTINENT, south of MYLOS and GORONA (GC).

Nova Fungi. A region in the south of the CONTINENT, part of the KAMOUR BLHYR (GC).

Nuit blanche [Sleepless Night]. Painted in 1905 AD, this was a preparatory work for an Augustin DESOMBRES fresco that was never done. In shows the influence of E.P. JACOBS, which is unexplainable, for that cartoonist would not be born for another three years! (MAD).
