Sainclair, Stanislas. Born in 696 AT in ALAXIS or PÂHRY. Editorialist, reporter and illustrator for L'ÉCHO DES CITÉS, he is the one who launched the formula that made this newspaper such a huge success. Vertically challenged, he was almost sold as a side show to a circus when he was a child. His gambling and drinking problems probably contributed much to the downwards spiral of the paper (EC, GC). See PALAZIO.
Saint-Gilles. See JAIL OF SAINT-GILLES.
Sainte-Barbe. See COLLEGE SAINTE-BARBE.
Sam. A rich merchant who came to MYLOS for business, and ventured too far in the bowels of that devouring city (A). See also TERRIE.
| Samaris.
An Obscure City that sits almost exactly on the Equator, close to the SEA OF SILENCES, hence its damp climate. A protectorate
of XHYSTOS, ruled by a Governor, it has for emblem the DROSERA and it is apparently physically impossible to take
photographs (GC, MS). The city was already in existence at the time of the construction of
The TOWER (LT). It is quite isolated and difficult to reach;
those travellers who come back are often struck by the SAMARIS
EFFECT (MS). See BAUER, BOOK
OF SAMARIS, MARK, MONT ANALOGUE,
MOREL, PIERRE and VOYAGE À SAMARIS. Samaris Effect. A strange affliction that visits some visitors to SAMARIS when they come back. The major symptom is a severe form of space-time confusion (MS, EC, GC). See BAUER and ELKAÏM. |

Samarobrive. An Obscure City in the Central southern portion of the CONTINENT, bordering the SEA OF FAREWELLS. Controls the QUADRA NOVA territory (GC). It has a number of points in common with the French city of AMIENS, and almost even took that name. It is reported that Captain NEMO visited the place, but it may have been in fact Jules VERNE. This event was recorded both by a drawing of Stanislas SAINCLAIR and a fresco of Augustin DESOMBRES (EC, MAD). See DEBOUVERIE, LESSING and TEMPLE OF SERVADAC.
| Samouraï. [Samurai]
"Resin and glass sculpture, fashioned in 1987 by Christian Poincignon, from a set
of original drawings by François SCHUITEN. The
statues have an average weight of 12 kilograms and a height of 43 centimeters, they have
been made in the Volum 3 workshops in Cachon. The presentation cube has been printed
in serigraph from original drawings by François SCHUITEN.
The issue is strictly limited to one hundred, numbered from 001 to 100, and twenty
off-market casts numbered EA 1 to EA 20 set aside for the author, the sculptor, the
editor and his collaborators." -Accompanying booklet. |
The sculpture is known under the name of L'ENFANT DE PHOEBUS in the Obscure World. |
Samyatin. See ZAMIATINE.
Sant'Elia, Antonio. Italian architect [1888-1916 AD] born in Como. One of the main pillars of the Futurists trend. Obscure archives are silent about him, but he undoubtably had an influence on ROBICK. See DE JONGHE.

Sarazin, Michel. His exact function has never been specified; but without him, L'ÉCHO DES CITÉS would never have seen its first issue (EC).
Saudan, Mikail and Sylvia. A couple living on the 1st level of a dome-building in GALATOGRAD (EC).
Sauveroche (Colonel). Prefect of the constabulary force of ALAXIS. He had the misfortune of being hit by the propeller of WAPPENDORF's AUTOGIRE during the demonstration (GC). He also suggested the idea of the SELF-PROPELLED SHIELD to the inventor, probably before the accident (ETPV).

Schaerbeek. [1] A train station of BRÜSEL. Tina TONERO worked briefly there as a switch operator, and more than one train found itself far from its intended destination (B, GC). [2] A neighbourhood of the north-east of BRUSSELS. The MAISON AUTRIQUE is located therein, at 266 chaussée de Haecht. See STREETS OF BRUSSELS and ZARBEC.

Schreder [Schréder?], Etienne. A talented letterer, whose ability can be appreciated by reading the original editions of L'ÉCHO DES CITÉS and SOUVENIRS DE L'ÉTERNEL PRÉSENT (EC).
| Schuiten, François. Belgian artist, born on April 26, 1956 AD, in BRUSSELS. His style is both realist and poetic. He handles black and white as well as colour, and he is a master of page layout. We also owe him several very imaginative scenic arrangements for museums and exhibits. He has a most special relation with the Obscure Universe, where he journeyed extensively with his friend and colleague Benoît PEETERS (ACO). See ARTS ET MÉTIERS, DE LA BARQUE, FIXORAMA, GO, PASSEURS, PORTE DE HAL, Luc SCHUITEN and SLEECKX. |

Scrollbooks. The mean of keeping documents on NOGEGON. Mostly used to record AXYSMS, their reading seems to require a special visor (N).
Sea of Farewells. Located directly south of the CONTINENT, west of the SEA OF SILENCES (GC). The original French word for "farewells", adieux, is somewhat more definitive...
Sea of Silences. The body of water located east of SAMARIS and that extends south to mix with the SEA OF FAREWELLS (FU). Thus named because it is so windless as to make sailing impossible. Dolphins, however, are quite numerous in the area (GC).
Second Shock. A financial crisis, in the wake of which Walther SCHLIWINSKI suggested the creation of the UNIQUE INDUSTRIAL CONSORTIUM (INT).
Secreta Creationis. One of the many books in the library of Elias Aureolus PALINGENIUS (LT).

Sentence (La). An Obscure OPERA by Dieter DENNIS, about the life and death of Evgenia RADISIC (GC). See also DURAINE DE MONTIGNAC.
Sentier Sect. An Obscure organisation obsessed with contacting our world. Following a rash of die-offs, most of the sixteen new members of the COUNCIL of XHYSTOS were members of this sect. It is probably to that factor that we owe the reconstruction of this city in the style favoured by Victor HORTA (INT). The word sentier does means "path", or "trail" in French; but given what we know of the Obscure World, the origin of the name may have another source entirely.
Septentrional Jungle. Located in the northern part of the CONTINENT (GC). One would expect the locale to be too cold for a jungle, but Obscure WEATHER does not follow the rules of our world. The NETWORK had an extension there during the Third LULL (FU2). See ARMILIA.
Servadac. See TEMPLE OF SERVADAC.
Servais, Raoul. Movie make, producer of a fictionalised documentary about TAXANDRIA (SEP). See also DROUOT and STREETS OF BRUSSELS.

Shadows. Given the half-seen nature of the Obscure World from our point of view, shadows (ombres, in French), play an important part in that universe. See CITÉ DES OMBRES, LIVRES DE L'OMBRE, MUSÉE DES OMBRES, OMBRE D'UN HOMME and STREETS OF BRUSSELS.
Ship of the Desert. A "Super-vehicle" developed by Axel WAPPENDORF to cross the Desert of SOMONITES in comfort (ETPV). It got lost on its maiden voyage (GC, RA). Its Grand Salon was decorated in a way strikingly similar to that of the NORMANDIE liner.
| Shipwreckers. According
to some sources, despicable malefactors might be using a lighthouse on the coast of IBLIS to steer passing aircrafts out of their way, probably in
order to pillage them afterwards (A2). Silis. An EJECTOR operator in DRAMARD (N). Sindaciu. A city mentioned as close-by in the BOOK OF SAMARIS (MS). |
