Title of a serigraphy by François SCHUITEN. In our
world, it is considered to be an allegory; in the Cities', one cannot be so sure.
Given the nature of the Obscure World, it would not at all be surprising to learn that
there is really an enormous book sitting on top of an isolated mountain somewhere on the CONTINENT. Underground. See MÉTRO. Unique Industrial Consortium. A powerful association of factory owners that controls the destiny of MYLOS. The idea was launched by Walther SCHLIWINSKI, but it was his son-in-law, Klaus VON RATHEN, who became the first director (EC, MAD, EP, GC). See SECOND SHOCK. |

Universal Exchanger. A gigantic autoroute exchange hub, built too fast from a preliminary draft by Axel WAPPENDORF. The incomplete drawing was misread and, instead of making car travel easier, the Exchanger is a mess on a continental scale. It is dangerous to travel through it. Some sections have been completely abandoned, and may not even be connected to the rest of the system (EC, GC).
Uqbar. See GATE OF UQBAR.
Urania. Ancient name of the North Shore of URBICANDE (GC).
Urbatect. An "architect of cities". The most famous, if not the only one, is ROBICK, who went so far as to impose a specific design of dishware in URBICANDE so that everything could be part of a unified whole (FU, MU, GC).
Urbatectural Brigades. The regulatory police in charge of applying the strict aesthetic rules established by ROBICK (EC). In his old age, this was an embarrassing topic for the architect (GC).
Urbicand. Anglicised version of URBICANDE.

Urbicande. The inhabitants of The TOWER may have possibly known a town of that name around AT (LT), but the "City of Cities" was officially created only in 673 AT, when the towns of BARTOLINE and URANIA joined together (GC). The currency did not include banknote, but only square coins (GC). Only the South Shore was reconstructed according to the plans of ROBICK, traffic across the DROUMA river being severely restricted. Strangely, it was the South Shore that got the most sun, while it should have be the reverse; since the city was built at the bottom of a ravine located north of the Equator. This phenomena may have been a side-effect of the presence of the CUBE which, in 735 AT, grew into a NETWORK that covered the city, then the whole CONTINENT (FU, MU). Urbicande was a town built to be impressive, and it did not age gracefully. It was shaken flat by an earthquake in 738 AT (A, GC). See ALLÉE DES TILLEULS, BROCH, COMMISSION OF HIGH INSTANCES, NEW URBICANDE, PARC ROYAL, STREETS OF BRUSSELS, URBICANDE AVENUES and URBO-TRAIN.

Urbicande Avenues. The South Shore of URBICANDE is divided by a grid of perfectly straight avenues. Many of those running north-south follow the lean of the ground and have built-in stairs. Among others, we know of the Avenues of Annexations, Bridge, Commission, Peace and Victory (FU, GC).
Urbicande Opera. A major piece on which Dieter DENNIS has been working for a long time (MAD, GC). See also DURAINE DE MONTIGNAC.
Urbicande Symphony. Composed by Dieter DENNIS, and played at the GREEN LAKE during the great fête given by Mary VON RATHEN. ROBICK was deeply moved (EC).
Urbis. A city of unknown location, mentioned in one of the books of Elias Aureolus PALINGENIUS. Known for its very massive tower (LT). See also TEMPLE OF URBIS.
Urbo-train. The main transportation system in URBICANDE. It ran exclusively on the South Shore, along an east-west axis parallel to the Voie Majeure [Major Way] (FU, GC).
| Urformen Der Kunst. "The
Original Art Form". A book of plant photographs by Karl BLOSSFELDT that had an enormous influence on the Obscure
World architecture. A mister Victor SYLVANO, from GENOVA, was looking for a copy in April 719 AT (EC). See also ACONITUM, VEGETALISTIC STYLE
and WASMUTH. Ursuline. Neighbour of the FOG CUTTER of the VILLAGE OF MYSTS. The latter was obsessed with her beautiful body (C). See RUDOLPH. |
