Wagenbach. A colleague of Albert CHAMISSO at the ASSURANCES GÉNÉRALES company (ODH).

German composer, born in Leipzig (1813-1883 AD).A genius or rare power, he wrote his own poems, drawing most often in Germanic national legends, and he modified the traditional concept of OPERA, never making any concession to virtuosity as such, in order to thightly link music to poetry and dance. |

| His music, full of symbols, obeys to a systematic exploitation of musical ideas, or leitmotive. His orchestra, one of the main levers of dramatic emotion, is full, coloured and admirably poetic (PLI). It is undeniable that he has had an influence on the Obscure World, especially in BAYREUTH (RA), but the exact nature of his contacts are unknown to us. See also Gustav MAHLER. |
Waize. A town on the island of YLIASTER, where a Miss SONIA lives (EC).
| Walter (Mister). Former resident of the CENTER FOR CARTOGRAPHY, who passed away in 761 AT, three months before the arrival of Roland DE CREMER. According to his supervisor, he was not a very efficient man. Master of KALIN (FI). |
Wappendorf, Axel. A famous inventor in the Obscure World. His inventions have been part of several exhibits in our own world, including a permanent display in the attic of the MAISON IMAGINAIRE. Born in ALAXIS in 691 AT, he built his first vehicle at the age of twelve. Although he specialized in transportation modes (ETPV), he is a universal SCIENTIST (GC). In 751 AT, he took off for ANTINÉA in the company of Mary VON RATHEN, who was then 15 years old. They missed their goal and found themselves in the antechamber of the worlds, where Axel met Jules VERNE and DESOMBRES (EP). He befriended the latter during his second PASSAGE. His encounter with Vigoleis KOELBER did not go as smoothly (MAD). Much to his annoyance, most strange occurences that cannot be explained end up being submitted to his attention (ODH).

Watches. Obscure people lavish a particular care on anything connected with TIME. Their watches are handsome and complicated things (B, GC), equipped with a window showing symbols to which a great importance is given (DMDC). Two different kinds of dial are known in our world, and the few that are available here are worth their weight in gold. See MYSTÈRES DU CALENDRIER, PYM and TRAMELAN.

Welles, James. English historian, author of a book titled "Shadows in the night, a secret society in Belgium ". It apparently brings a credible answer to several questions regarding Joseph POELAERT and the urbanistic evolution of BRUSSELS (GC). See also LESSING.
Wiertz. Belgian painter [1806-1865 AD]. His paintings were so large that it was impossible to take them out of his workshop, located in a rundown neighbourhood of BRUSSELS. The building became a museum, and Pierre LIDIAUX was convinced that it was a point of PASSAGE (GC).

Wilbur. Uncle of Sarah CHAMISSO. Aunt AGATHE implied that he may have had some marital problems (ODH).
Willem, Alex. [1] Obscurologist living in the vicinity of NAMUR, in Belgium. Webmaster of an INTERNET site describing several PASSAGES allowing access to the Obscure Cities. Participant to the Second OBSCURE CONVENTION. The fact that he has the same initials as Axel WAPPENDORF seems to be a genuine coincidence. [2] Obscure engineer who designed the PAVILION OF PANORAMAS for the Obscure EXPO (INT).
Wronski, Hoené. A scientist, member of the LODERER-ARDAN Expedition, that explored the MARAHUACA PIT (EC).
| Window Washers.
In CALVANI, which is built mostly out of glass, they have a
very powerful union. The great height of the surfaces to be cleaned requires that they use
one-man balloons. Their strike of 730 AT had a severe impact on the city (GC). See
