Xhystite. "The syndrome of XHYSTOS", an affliction peculiar to the inhabitants of that city. The main symptom is a complete loss of direction: the striken cannot find the way back to their own home (EC). This may be due to the fact that several neighbourhood of the city are identical to one another (GC).
Xhystos. An ancient Obscure City in the east of the CONTINENT. The inhabitants of The TOWER already knew of its existence (LT). It was one of the first to reconstruct itself; based only on a few drawings by Victor HORTA (GC). ROBICK lived for five years in that city during his youth (EC). Built mostly of metal, rust is a constant problem (GC). It used to be powerful and dynamic, but is now considered on its decline and is often described as "stiffling". Xhystos (Boulevard of). One of the major arteries of ALAXIS. l'ÉCHO DES CITÉS had offices there, at number 9 (EC).
Yalou. An animal, perhaps entirely mytical, said to belong to the FAUNA of the CONTINENT (PGC).
Yliaster. [1] A vast island to the east of the CONTINENT. ARDAN and LODERER found there strange ruins similar to the remains of the MARAHUACA PIT (EC). The isle still harbours some survivors of a species that is the ancestor of the Obscure breed of HORSE (GC). See also WAIZE. [2] Title of a book that can be found both in the LIBRARY of Elias Aureolus PALINGENIUS and the gigantic CAYLUS one (LT).
Ypigi. The mysterious destination of the LAETITIA, a considerable distance away from BRÜSEL (INT).
Yvalo. Obsolete spelling of IVALO (GC).
Zabel, Lucian. A mail carrier of BLOSSFELDTSTAD who was bringing letters to the NIERENDORF. A good civil servant, he never questioned their presence in the last old-style building of the city (EC). See also POSTAL SERVICE and STAMPS.
Zacharius. Uncle of Ferdinand ROBUR HATTERAS (RA).
Zamiatine. A character from La CITÉ DES OMBRES, supposedly a photographer mixed up in a shady case of archive tampering (CO).

Zamiatine, Eugène Ivanovich [French spelling] or Evgeny
Ivanovich Samyatin [English variant based on original cyrillic spelling].
(1884-1937 AD) An outstanding russian-soviet
writer, born in Lebedyan, in the Tambov region. He was one of the founders of the
dystopian genre in science fiction, and is the author of the classic We (1924
AD). He died in exile in France. Interestingly, he also curated the
construction of ice brakers built in England for the Soviet government. One of those
ships, the Krasin, found the lost NOBILE expedition (INT, MS).
Zanzibor. A city of the KAMOUR BLHYR, in the south of the CONTINENT (GC).
Zara. The fifth of the HOLLOW EARTHS. It is made of two concentric shells, of which only the external one rotates, on an horizontal axis. The space between the two crusts is dimly lit from the outside through translucent rocks. The cliffs of the inner sphere are inhabited by the all-women race of the GAMMES and a powerful source of LIGHT lies at its center (TC, Z). The word zara means "the she-stranger" in Hebrew. See NELLE, ORION, VICHNOUS, VINOIS and ZARANITES.
Zaranites. Social insects of the planet ZARA. The GAMMES have developed their architecture and life style by observing them (TC). Their sting paralyses and they can suck the essence of living creatures (Z), including their own males, which are devoured by the females after mating. They are also found within OLIVE's home world. Zarbec (Great Hall of). A large covered market of XHYSTOS. The surrounding neighbourhood includes several greenhouses, and bears a strong resemblance to some views of CALVANI (A). The phonetic of the word suggests an etymological relation with SCHAERBEEK.
Zeda. A region located west of the GREEN LAKE (GC).
Zédra. Described as the "attraction planet" of the HOLLOW EARTHS. Possibly the body from which emanates the very peculiar form of GRAVITY present in this planetary system (Z).
Zelators. A religious sect. With the THEOSOPHES, they base their credo on the prophecies of Honorius ZOSER. The discovery of the MARAHUACA PIT put them in considerable turmoil (EC). See TEMPLE OF KEPLER.
Zeppo-Cola. A beverage served on board the zeppelin KØBENHAVN (RA).
Zileheroum. Location of a famous battle, that allowed SODROVNO-VOLDACHIA to gain its independence (GC).
Ziller (Maître G.). Notary of Aurillac who established the sale contract for the LAGUIOLE domain bought by Augustin DESOMBRES.
Ziller, Gilles. Serigraphist of our world, specialised in works based on famous bande dessinées. He surely found a PASSAGE, for he is the author of ROBICK's official portrait (CBD).
Zogecâr. See FOREST OF ZOGECÂR.
Zor. An Obscure City located on the coast of the SEA OF SILENCES, much to the east of SAMARIS (FU). Some of the passengers of the BATTISTA were from that locale (EC).
| Zoser, Honorius. In
the World of the Cities, a prophet, possibly the MAN
WITH THE BIRDS (A, EC). It may be a coincidence, but Zoser is the name of the Pharaoh
of the 2nd Dynasty under whose rule, around 2700 BC, were raised the first pyramids of
ancient Egypt. See also THEOSOPHES and ZELATORS. Zuur, Bert. A participant to the First OBSCURE CONVENTION and, as a good "creative director", he brings food and drink to his colleagues of the "Web of the Obscure Cities" INTERNET site when they are hard at work on it.
